Windows FLP

Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs (FLP) is the compact operating system which appeared on July 8, 2006.

Available only within the agreement Microsoft Software Assurance, Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs is based on Windows XP Embedded Service Pack 2. Thus, computers with Windows Fundamentals are not too useful in itself, but can run far off the applications which are stored on Windows Server 2003 due to use of the Remote Desktop function or technology of the independent company, for example Citrix ICA Client.

Specific Features

Advantages of Windows Fundamentals will be obvious to the enterprises having outdated computers which cannot be upgraded to XP. This solution will allow the enterprises to use the advanced systems capabilities of security similar to that which computers with XP SP2 have, but on the hardware basis not capable to ensure effective functioning of XP. However there are also some restrictions. Computers with Windows Fundamentals are intended only for office working applications of general purpose, such as Microsoft Office and Microsoft|Microsoft Office]] and Microsoft Internet]] Explorer]] (IE), and cannot be used for needs of specialists with special needs, for example graphic designers, animators and Web developer. As this technology is available only within the agreement of Software Assurance and requires existence of the managed server environment, Windows Fundamentals will be useless for the small enterprises limited in means which could derive the maximum benefit from availability of the operating system of this kind.

Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs includes:

• The management tools similar to Windows XP SP2 that allows to use for computers with this Windows Update, Automatic Update or Systems Management Server operating system
• Interface similar to Windows XP SP2
• Component architecture thanks to what installation only of those components which are necessary to the specific user is possible
• Pro-active protection, thanks to service packets and packets of security and also such tools, as Windows Firewall, Data Execution Prevention and Internet Explorer's Pop-Up Blocker
