Biography

1941-1965

The metropolitan Jonah was born on June 13, 1941 in Moscow, in family of the worker. In 1959-63 studied in the Moscow Theological Seminary (MTS), from 1963 to 1967 - in the Moscow Spiritual Academy (MSA). On September 1, 1965 became the novice of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, and on September 21 the same year accepted tonsured.

1971-1992

In 1971 the metropolitan Jonah is hailed the abbot, on October 14, 1981 - in the archimandrite's dignity, on October 20, 1992 he was elected the bishop Astrakhan and Enotayevsky and hirotonisan on October 25, 1992.

2002-2013

On February 25, 2002 Jonah was hailed the archbishop, and the solution of the Sacred synod of ROC of March 12, 2013 is appointed the head of the Astrakhan metropolitanate with the title "Astrakhan and Kamyzyaksky", built in a metropolitanate on March 24.

2020: Death from a coronavirus

On May 4, 2020 it became known of the death of the honourable prior of the capital temple of the Feast of the Cross in Altufyevo of the metropolitan Ion. According to preliminary data, he died from the pneumonia caused by COVID-19 coronavirus.

Jonah was 78 years old. He died in capital hospital No. 50, reported on  the website   of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC).

The metropolitan Jonah since July 15, 2016 for health reasons in connection with achievement of 75-year age stayed on rest in Moscow where was an honourable prior of the Krestovozdvizhensky temple to Altufyevo.[1]

It is not the first death of the priest from a coronavirus of new type in Russia. At the end of April, 2020  the Bishop of Zheleznogorsk and Lgov Veniamin who caught COVID-19 died. He became the first bishop of ROC who died from a coronavirus.

The head of Synod department of ROC of relationship of church with society and media  Vladimir Legoyda  said that rumors that the church hides scales of infection with a coronavirus among priests, have under themselves no reasons. According to him, the number of the infected priests are not higher, than among doctors and police officers.
