2020: Connection the Nevsky Outpost ice breaker to LTE-450 network

On June 9, 2020 Tele2, the alternative mobile operator, reported that together with SUE PILARN, specializing in warning and liquidation of abnormal oil spills, tested LTE-450 technology in the water area of the Gulf of Finland. The Nevsky Outpost ice breaker was provided with the fast mobile Internet at a frequency of 450 MHz with the help of the equipment of Skylink. The vessel ensures environmental safety on the Neva River and in the water area of east part of the Gulf of Finland – the Nevsky lip. Thanks to features of LTE technology in the range of 450 MHz – range and high penetration – the ice breaker stays in touch with the coast without delays of passing of a signal all the time.

The rescue tow ice breaker "Nevsky Outpost" is the multifunction vessel which is responsible for environmental safety, liquidates zazhor, provides pilotage in ice conditions. For this ASBL "Nevsky Outpost" comes to the Nevsky bay to distance up to 20 km from the coast, at the same time width of a lip is 15 km. For a continuous and stable relation with the coast, timely receiving gidro-and weather forecasts, cards of an ice situation, exchange of operational information with courts and with dispatching services the vessel needs the fast and reliable channel of Internet communication.

Possibilities of the LTE Internet with higher frequency ranges (1800 MHz or 900 MHz) are limited: short waves of a signal are reflected from a water smooth surface and fade that affects stability of connection and speed of the Internet. At the same time the range of the base station working in the range of 450 MHz reaches 20 km. Moreover, the signal has higher penetration. For this reason users of Skylink get access to the high-speed mobile Internet even in the most remote areas, whether it be housing estates or the water area of the Nevsky lip.

Onboard Nevsky Outpost installed the equipment of Skylink which provided the vessel with communication with the outside world. At the same time the Skylink routers give access to the mobile Internet of Tele2 on all frequency ranges (450 MHz, 800 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2600 MHz), depending on the place of stay of the user.
