RNPTs of epidemiology and microbiology uses cloud services of ActiveCloud for studying of COVID-19

On June 11, 2020 the ActiveCloud company reported that it provided GU "Republican Scientific and Practical Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology" computing resources for carrying out medical calculations. Services of cloud provider are used including for work in the field of studying of a genome of a coronavirus.

According to the company, in connection with COVID-19 pandemic the number of the conducted laboratory researches conducted by RNPTs sharply increased, at the same time development of test systems for diagnosis of a disease is based on determination of the most specific sections of a genome of a virus. Studying of the genomic sequences of pathological agents – a difficult computing task. Processing of such files takes long time: even after reading the genome represents a line, consisting of four letters (A, C, G, T), and its length can reach several billion characters. At the same time in DNA there are no absolutely accurate "punctuation marks" which would indicate the beginning and the end of genes offers and other functionally significant elements.

Load of local computing powers of RNPTs grew. With respect thereto it was decided to use cloud services for carrying out the most resource-intensive scientific research, in particular genotyping of pathogens and statistical processing of information arrays.

Engineers of ActiveCloud suggested to use resources of cloud data center E-Cloud for the solution of this task. Specialists of provider helped with setup of virtual infrastructure and the software. Use of cloud resources allowed to accelerate processing of big arrays of statistical information and to release local computing resources of research center.

Use of cloud computing for work of genomic assemblers and statistical data processing allowed to save time and to unload our local computing resources. Also, in my opinion, use of cloud computing is reasonable for solving of tasks which jointly execute several contractors, and the first stage for storage of the general databases.
