2017: Permission not to specify a floor in the passport

Since August 24, 2017 it is possible not to specify belonging to the defined sex in the Canadian passport – so in addition to F (woman), M (man), designation X appeared.  

1947: The passport of Canada begins to be issued only to Canadians

In 1947 the Law on citizenship of Canada got approval of the queen, and from this point only citizens of Canada could receive the passport of Canada. Nevertheless, on the first page still it appeared - "the citizen of Canada is the British citizen".

1940: Trotsky's murderer uses the counterfeit passport of Canada

The Canadian passport was the purpose for criminals and agents of the foreign governments. Reasons: simplicity of the procedure of issue of passports till 1970, weakness of protection against counterfeits and a large number of the visa-free countries.

In 1940 Ramón Merkader (under a name Frank Jackson), the agent of NKVD of the USSR, went to Mexico City by the counterfeit Canadian passport to kill Lev Trotsky.

1921: Emergence of a modern form of the passport. The general nationality with Britain

The modern form of the passport appeared in 1921. At that time Canadians were the British citizens, and Canada had the general nationality with the United Kingdom.

1862: The first passports in Canada

The first passports were issued in 1862.
