2020: Implementation of Astra Linux Common Edition

On July 13, 2020 Astra Linux Group, the domestic developer of operating systems and means of virtualization, announced end of the first stage of transfer to domestic software products of IT infrastructures of educational institutions of the Tula region. For July, 2020 the operating system of general purpose Astra Linux Common Edition is installed in workplaces of teachers and in information science classes at high comprehensive school No. 20 in the city of Novomoskovsk, in the municipal budget center of education No. 33 in Tula and also in Krasnolessky education center in the settlement of Uzlovsky district of the same name. Projects of migration are implemented by forces of Astra Linux Group and the Tula company integrator "Rusnyyutek" based on which the authorized Astra Linux training center is organized.

During project works the staff of Astra Linux Group and Rusnyyutek should not just report to customers of the license to use software, and to implement the whole complex of actions to ensure correct functioning of information systems and to help personnel as soon as possible adapted to the updated environment.

Functionality of the Astra Linux Common Edition operating system allows to solve practically all daily IT tasks of the organizations, at the same time in workplaces of employees is quite often set to software, developed for application only in the environment of OS of the Microsoft Windows family. The specialists coordinating migration from vendor and integrator helped customers to pick up and set such analogs of legacy solutions which correctly work under Linux and allow to save functionality necessary for users.

The personnel of educational institutions initially had competences for work only with Windows, and transition to Astra Linux and furthermore use of the PC from other OS in the course of teaching, caused concern in employees. To break this barrier, the staff of Astra Linux Group provided to customers services of expert technical support regarding consultation on installation, setup and use of domestic goods and also helped to define the most suitable for migration automated jobs and to set on them licenses.

For school No. 20 which after the made earlier trial purchase of 50 annual licenses for Astra Linux Common Edition in the spring of 2020 purchased 100 more perpetual licenses the project on migration of 79 computers and notebooks in classes of information science and 21 PC of teachers was implemented. Specialists of Astra Linux Group also tested document flow in the preset LibreOffice program and were convinced of its correct work. Besides, the personnel of school got from vendor all necessary support, including auxiliary materials and instructions.

In the municipal budget center of education No. 33 after delivery of licenses together with the system administrator of the organization jobs based on Astra Linux with an opportunity to work fully with documents and peripheral equipment due to parallel installation of the second operating system were created. For demonstration of domestic software products and training of school students it was set to several automated workplace in educational classes. For July, 2020 the staff of education center uses jobs with Astra Linux OS, applying the Russian solution "My Office Standard" to document flow.

In the center of education Krasnolessky notebooks of teachers were transferred to domestic software products. Specialists transferred with Windows to the implemented operating system all information necessary for them and ensured correct functioning among Astra Linux of legacy software and peripheral equipment. Also reference materials which helped to master work with the installed OS quicker were provided to the customer.

Budgetary funds for upgrade of information systems and personnel training are selected to educational institutions step by step therefore also process of migration goes on domestic solutions gradually. 25% of jobs are transferred to software to July, 2020 in education center No. 33 on domestic, and within a year the customer is going to importozamestit all 100%. Updating of the park of desktop computers after which a transfer of all infrastructure on the Russian software products will be made is necessary to the Krasnolessky center at first.

Despite local character, for us these projects are sign, first of all because in educational institutions of Tula region not only jobs of teachers, but also school classes of information science are transferred to Astra Linux OS. These cases allowed us to develop a migration algorithm for such tasks. We design the acquired experiment to scale in schools of other regions. That moment is essentially important for us that information science will be taught in the environment of Linux Astra OS, and children at school will be able already to study to interact with our operating system — Roman Mylitsyn, the chief innovation officer of Astra Linux Group comments.
