Nokia DSS (Dynamic Spectrum Sharing)

Product
Developers: Nokia Corporation
Date of the premiere of the system: 2020/07/14
Branches: Telecommunication and communication

Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) is technology of sharing of a range in the dynamic mode.

2020: Availability of software of DSS Nokia

On July 14, 2020 the Nokia company announced availability of program updating which will allow to upgrade freely radio systems 4G/LTE and to bring them to level 5G/NR. According to the developer, this opportunity matters for customers of Nokia who will be able to transfer about 1 million radio modules to technology 5G. By the end of the year the number of such modules will increase up to 3.1 million, and in 2021 will exceed 5 million. Upgrading the existing radio systems using a software update, Nokia simplifies transfer process of a frequency range 4G/LTE on use in networks 5G/NR. This step will support the existing customers, having given them an opportunity of smooth and economic transfer of the set hardware platform to technology 5G/NR.

Nokia DSS

As noted in Nokia, the majority of the existing devices 5G/NR also TDD mmWave works in the ranges of TDD cmWave, but the following wave of implementations of a 5G/NR will be connected with transfer of the existing ranges of FDD in network 5G/NR. TDD channels with big capacity in a combination with FDD channels also provide a good radio covering. The technology of aggregation of the bearing TDD/FDD Carrier Aggregation will be used for this purpose.

According to the developer, the possibility of upgrade of radio systems 4G/LTE using replacement of the software will simplify implementation of technology 5G/NR FDD and will make unnecessary difficult and expensive settings on the websites. As of July, 2020 Nokia has 359 customers of solutions 4G/LTE. The majority of the radio modules FDD installed at them can be upgraded by a software update. As a result operators will be able to provide good radio covering 5G/NR at low frequencies at a refarming of the frequency range which is available for them.

For July, 2020 Nokia already applies technology of sharing of a range in the dynamic mode (Dynamic Spectrum Sharing, DSS) in the working networks 2G/GSM-3G/WCDMA-4G/LTE. Recently the company implemented this technology and for networks 4G/LTE-5G/NR. Thus, the DSS technology covered all existing technologies of mobile communication and made process of a refarming 4G/LTE - a 5G/NR easy and productive. In the standard scenario the DSS technology will be used in one or several ranges 4G/LTE. Carrier frequencies in these ranges will be aggregated with other ranges selected only for 4G/LTE or 5G/NR. The solution DSS Nokia covers all technologies of wireless access from 2G/GSM to a 5G/NR, claim in Nokia.

According to the estimates of Nokia, this solution will allow telecom industry to save tens of billions of euros due to failure from expensive upgrade of hardware on the existing websites. Operators will be able to transfer the networks to standard 5G/NR using upgrade of the software.

"It is considered that the concept of an okryty radio subsystem (Open RAN) will facilitate processes of transition from one generation of mobile communication to another and will simplify implementation of new features. The solutions Flexi and AirScale Nokia already offer program updating more than for 5 million radio modules 4G which can be transferred to standard 5G. The solution on a refarming of a frequency range of FDD matters for rapid and universal implementation of 5G networks",
