2021: Nakivo Backup & Replication 10.5
December 1, 2021 it became known about the release of version 10.5 of the solution for backup data protection virtual infrastructures and Nakivo Backup & Replication.
Nakivo focuses on 6 key aspects of virtual datacenter availability:
- Protect virtual, physical, cloud, and SaaS ecosystems with the ability to ensure application data consistency, improve backup performance, and reduce backup storage.
- Instantly recover virtual machines, files, and application objects directly from deduplicated backups.
- Perform virtual machine replication in near real time and manage the disaster recovery process with Site Recovery.
- Up to 2x faster backup, replication, and recovery than traditional solutions, and up to 50% less network load.
- An easy-to-use web-based interface for administrators with many amenities, such as flexible deployment, policy-based management, and global infrastructure search.
- A simple way to provide data protection (BaaS) and disaster recovery (DRaaS) as a service.
There are two key innovations in Nakivo Backup & Replication 10.5:
- VMware Monitoring - a set of tools to get complete information information about the performance and state of the infrastructure. VMware vSphere From a single dashboard, you can monitor CPU, RAM, utilization disk hosts , and VMware vSphere datastors and virtual machines. This dashboard provides both historical data and real-time information that allows you to analyze performance trends, investigate problems of various nature, and predict the future operating conditions of virtual machines and their needs. storages
- Hardened Virtual Appliance is an easy way to deploy Nakivo Backup & Replication and protect data from Ransomware (the protection mechanism itself appeared in the previous version). The solution can be deployed as a pre-built virtual module based on Ubuntu Server and protect data from deletion and encryption by malware. Batches that are sent to a repository created as part of a Virtual Appliance can be marked immutable for a specific period of time. After that, even the superuser will not be able to modify or delete the backpack, or cancel the immutable property.
To monitor virtual environments, VMware has a vRealize Operations solution, but it requires additional license costs, and administrators do not always have to look deeply into the infrastructure to understand what is not working. To do this, Nakivo Backup & Replication 10.5 monitoring features became available, at no additional cost, along with a backup solution.
Monitoring features in Nakivo Backup & Replication 10.5
- On the Monitoring tab, you can add the necessary objects for monitoring by clicking the Add Monitored Items button.
- You can add hosts and vaults for monitoring.
- If you expand the host, you can see its virtual machines and their status (started/stopped).
- Objects added for monitoring are marked in the right pane.
- You can switch the view from hierarchical item selection to policy selection.
- You can add Rules for the objects to be included in the monitoring. For example, you can add a rule based on a virtual machine name template.
- There are quite a few criteria available for generating rules, such as datastores, tags, templates, and more.
- The rule conditions are also different - "contains," "equals," "begins with," and more. Rules are added one at a time to the policy container on the right. When the administrator has finished adding rules, he presses Save.
- Objects are added to the monitoring either if all the added rules are followed or if one of the added rules is followed.
- After adding all objects, you can get a dashboard for each of them, where you can see the main performance metrics of the CPU, memory and disk, as well as problems that have arisen.
- For datastors, just basic storage occupancy metrics are available, but then this functionality will expand.
- For all charts, you can select the range (from the calendar) and the scale of the data display time.
- By default, Nakivo collects data every minute. If it is not possible to collect every minute within 5 minutes, then the interval switches to 5 minutes (in this case, the 5 pint date will be recorded at a time). If it is not possible to collect every minute within 10 minutes, then the interval switches to 10 minutes (in this case, the 10 pint date will be recorded at a time).
Hardened Virtual Appliance Capabilities
With Nakivo Backup & Replication 10.5, you can create an immutable repository where malware cannot encrypt or delete stored backups.
The following changes appeared in this functionality:
- The Ubuntu version has been updated (64 bit).
- Nakivo refused to use the root account, instead using the nkvuser user, which is created during the deployment.
- Problems with the SSH connection will cause the account trying to connect for additional security. You will also be logged in to Virtual Appliance after several failed attempts.
- Shared memory is now quite secure.
- Immutable repositories are now built into the virtual module. If you have deleted files physically at the Linux level, you can restore them using Repositories > Manage > Repair.
- After setting the immutility flag, the nkvuser user can no longer remove the flag.
- Once immutability is enabled, the default SSH port changes to 2221.
All these changes will protect backups (at least the most critical systems should be protected in this way - storing them on immutable repositories, local or cloud on S3).[1]
2020: Nakivo Backup & Replication v10
On July 26, 2020, NAKIVO announced the release of an updated version of NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10.
According to the company, in the tenth version of NAKIVO Backup & Replication appeared the following:
- Support for vSphere 7 - This platform is now fully supported at the same time as earlier versions. Administrators can get all the capabilities of the updated platform, including backup, replication, granular recovery, and disaster recovery.
- Backup storages to Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage - Now Block Build backups cloudy storage is fully supported by NAKIVO B&R v10. You can transfer backups, virtual machines physical copies, servers databases Oracle and instances directly to the Wasabi cloud. Amazon EC2 Instant forward recovery supports not only virtual machines, but also folders and files objects. applications
- Physical-to-Virtual (P2V) Recovery - You can now move your physical machines to the virtual environment using the tenth version of NAKIVO. Virtual machine creation occurs through lightweight agents in physical OS. You can also restore physical system backups directly to the cloud.
- Backup desktops Linux - you can now back up workstations Ubuntu Linux on board in the same way as you do for physical workstations. servers All operations are done in a single dashboard.
- User interface enhancements - The centralized dashboard now allows you to control all aspects of backup and perform operations more intuitively.
