2020: ALTO announcement - stent for abdominal aortic aneurysm
In mid-August 2020, California-based Endologix unveiled the ALTO abdominal stent. It is intended for endovascular procedures and allows the restoration of aortic patency in a wide range of patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm. The new stent design allows for successful surgery even in patients with a short and problematic aortic aneurysm neck.
Ideally, the neck of the aortic aneurysm, where the stent is attached, should be even and smooth. But in many cases this is not the case, and a conventional mechanical seal does not provide sufficient crimping. According to the company, ALTO is equipped with a new polymer ring that tightly covers even irregularly shaped lumens and which maintains stable aortic diameter and patency five years after implantation.
Endologix Marketing Director Matt Thompson noted that the ALTO stent will provide doctors with a new, more durable endovascular treatment option than traditional stents. In addition, thanks to design and manufacturing changes, ALTOs are expected to improve short-term treatment outcomes over Ovation iX abdominal stent.
The ALTO O-ring became 7 mm higher to provide tight fit in anatomically complex areas. The built-in balloon makes it easier to position the O-ring, and a strong seamless design helps to reduce the likelihood of late adverse events. A flexible catheter for OD delivery 15F facilitates maneuvering and passing the stent through narrow sclerosed vessels. At the same time, a smooth, fully laminated PTFE surface reduces the risk of occlusion and injury to the vessel, and the spiral design of the nitinol stent increases its flexibility.[1]
