2020: Connection of university to service for protection against network threats of the class Unified Threat Management (UTM)

The Rostelecom company announced on August 17, 2020 project implementation on information security for the Kalmyk state university of B.B. Gorodovikov (Kalmgu). The staff of the company connected to regional university service for protection against network threats of the class Unified Threat Management (UTM) which ensures complex safety of network perimeter of the organization using several interconnected means: the firewall, an intrusion prevention system, antivirus software and also spam - and web filters.

"The Kalmyk state university of B.B. Gorodovikov is reference university and the main source of manpower for the republic. The university has the developed telecommunication infrastructure which to us is vital, and we decided to attract our old and checked partner to its service and protection – Rostelecom company", – Badma Salayev, the rector of the university told.

Protection of network of branched infrastructure Kalmgu requires centralized operation by separate products, the correct setup and permanent updating of signatures and security policies. It means serious capital costs and also existence in staff of specialists in information security of high qualification. The managed services of an ecosystem Solar MSS which include also UTM allow to raise the security level and at the same time to cut down expenses on protection of network.

Connection of service requires installation in infrastructure of the customer of compact telecommunication equipment that takes no more than one day. Other components are placed in a cloud platform and are operated by specialists of the Center of monitoring and response to cyberthreats of Solar JSOC of Rostelecom-Solar company who in mode 24х7 provide technical support and product update. It allows to guarantee performance and fault tolerance of service, use of relevant settings and signatures and also fast detection and elimination of incidents of security in a short time. Testing of UTM service was held within a month during which a system processed about 5 million sessions of Internet connection and about 90 GB of data. In total 198 users participated in the project from the university.

Settings of service can be configured flexibly for current demands – to quickly reduce or increase performance, to expand functionality and also to connect new branches or points less than per day. Installation of two sets of the equipment is possible – at failure of one device of its function will duplicate spare.
