2021: S300 with 4 TB and 6 TB capacity for SMB
On May 10, 2021, Toshiba Electronics Europe announced the release of two hard drives (HDD) in the S300 line, designed for use in small and medium-sized video surveillance systems. Models are available in 4 TB and 6 TB capacities, and use tile magnetic recording (SMR) technology, due to which data are stored with a higher density. Drives are optimized for small and medium deployments, allowing you to increase storage capacity at a lower cost and reduced power consumption.
According to the company, the line update is aimed at meeting the growing demand for flexible scalability of video surveillance systems, such as network DVRs (NVRs) and digital DVRs (DVRs). The number of streams from cameras of proper definition (HD) doubled - from 32 to 64. In addition, the buffer size has grown to 256 MB, which provides a smoother transfer of data from cameras.
4 TB and 6 TB models reduce the total cost of ownership of these systems for small and medium-sized enterprises while maintaining performance, quality, and reliability. narrated by Larry Martinez-Palomo, CEO of storage products at Toshiba Electronics Europe |
Two additional models in the S300 line have already appeared on sale.
2020: Toshiba S300 и S300 Pro
August 27, 2020 Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH announced the expansion of the line hard drives for video surveillances Toshiba S300 systems. It includes S300 models that use tile magnetic recording technology (SMR) - they are designed for systems in small and medium-sized businesses. At the same time, drives for video surveillance systems with traditional magnetic recording (CMR) will be designated as S300 Pro - these models are designed for use in professional solutions and in. public sector
Available in 2TB and 4TB versions, the S300 series hard drives are optimized for low-cost video surveillance applications and meet their requirements, while also meeting the requirements of video surveillance systems with support for up to 32 drives for high-definition video streams. The S300 series with 5400 rpm and 128 MB buffer meets the requirements of high definition video surveillance systems, including technologies for set-top boxes, digital DVRs and network video recorders (NVRs).
The small-capacity S300 series is based on SMR technology, which involves the use of overlapping tracks to increase data density and leaves only the necessary magnetic surface for proper reading. This is the main difference from CMR technology, where each track is separated by a small distance. As a result, SMR provides higher capacity in the same magnetic region as the CMR drive, helping to reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) of the media. The implementation of the appropriate cache architecture compensates for the potential risks of accidentally overwriting overlapping tracks, so the S300 series is suitable for low-cost video surveillance systems.
For more expensive and demanding video surveillance systems that support processing up to 64 streams from high-resolution cameras, video analysis, face tracking and video editing, Toshiba offers the S300 Pro series with CMR technology. They have a large capacity - up to 10 TB and a buffer size of up to 256 MB and are suitable for use in digital video recorders for surveillance systems (SDVR), network video recorders for surveillance systems (SNVR) and hybrid SDVR.
The updated Toshiba S300 and S300 Pro series hard drives are a customized storage solution for video surveillance systems that are becoming increasingly common in the world. In accordance with the requirements of the modern video surveillance storage market, they provide stable 24-hour operation and are optimally suited for leading video recorders and network video recorders for video surveillance systems with eight or more disk bays. Toshiba helps video surveillance integrators, installation service providers, and end users record and store their video and audio streams with confidence, noted Lorenzo Martinez-Palomo, Head of Data Storage at Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH |
The number of cameras that the CCTV system can support is determined by simulating performance, taking into account that each high-resolution camera transmits a 4 Mbps data stream. Actual results may vary depending on various factors, including the types of cameras installed, the hardware and software capabilities of the system and the video compression technology used, as well as settings of system variables, such as resolution, number of frames per second, etc.
Availability of Toshiba S300 Series Hard Drives
The Toshiba S300 Pro series and the S300 4 TB model are already available on August 27, 2020, and the S300 2 TB model is expected to go on sale at the end of 2020.
