The U.S. Air Force implements the AI system indicating the need of repair of airplanes

Customers: U.S. AIR FORCE (USAF)

Contractors: C3.ai

Project date: 2020/09

At the beginning of September, 2020 the U.S. Air Force reported that they implement an AI system which will announce need of repair of airplanes in advance. It is supposed that such system will be able to maintain operability of airplanes during more progressive tense.

The platform is developed by C3.ai AI company from San Francisco which works with military since 2017. The company expands the systems to take the bigger number of airplanes and weapon systems under control.

The contract with the U.S. Air Force includes the training program on data processing for pilots who will use the platform for predictive analytics in the new systems. The contract will allow the Air Force to master necessary technologies and to adjust training courses which will provide "self-sufficiency" of military forces, the technical director and the president of C3.ai Ed Abbo reported.

The platform works with AI of several types and allows to process different forms of input data. A system can define when the airplane needs checkup and replacement of parts before the part wears out and will lead to accident. For the first time a system was tested by old airplanes which service in required processing of a set of hand-written documents using operation algorithms with texts in a natural language. Since then the C3.ai company developed methods of machine learning for data processing of telemetry and sensors from modern airplanes, such as F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Lightning II.

Not only the Air Force are engaged in scaling of new technologies. The division of defense innovations emphasized that the new platform will provide serious economy of means and time. The joint center AI of the U.S. Department of Defense works on programs of preventive maintenance of helicopters. Ad Abbo also reported that the C3.ai company cooperates also with other military units, such as Naval Forces, Marine corps and aviation fleet.[1]
