On September 2, 2020 Russian Railways (RR) announced that they will adjust train schedules using geoanalytics. This project is implemented jointly by mobile operator Tele2 and JSC Research Institute of Railway Transport.

Partners completed the first stage of the analytical project on studying of passenger traffics between 81 couples of Russian cities. The analytics of Big Data is executed on the basis of the depersonalized information on movements of subscribers of mobile operator between the cities. These data on the basis of models of machine learning were extrapolated to all population thanks to what results of the analysis are applicable to all residents of these cities. In a research trips of residents of the cities of the central, southern and northwest regions of Russia, the Volga region and the Black Earth, the Urals and Siberia were considered.

For studying the period of 2018, 2019 and the first quarter 2020 with selection of methods of movement by different types of transport and assessment of travelers on the main highways, says the Russian railway carrier was selected.

Project objective — train schedule efficiency evaluation and also development of offers on its change. The provided analytics will form the basis of the further analysis and detailed forecast of passenger traffic on the basis of the models of mathematical optimization creating recommendations about change of the schedule.

At the second stage in the project the list of the cities of Russia for the analysis of traffic will be expanded, and recommendations – are automated. It is noted that implementation of this project takes place in the Russian Railway within the industry initiatives directed to digital transformation of the company and increase in efficiency of its activity. Assessment of the transport market will allow to reveal growth points allowing to raise a share of railway transport in the market of passenger traffic.[1]
