Throat cancer

2020: Progress in cancer therapy of a throat using robots surgeons

At the beginning of September, 2020 researchers from Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles provided a research according to which the best long-term results were received at the patients with an early stage of planocellular cancer of a rotoglotka operated using the transoral robotic systems. Researchers consider that it can be connected with better visualization, the smaller need for the subsequent radiotheraphy and an opportunity to delete a tumor with one piece using minimum invasive methods.

A robotic system at minimum invasive transoral procedure the surgeon manages. A system consists of the endoscope with the lamp attached to it and the camera which transfer to the doctor three-dimensional images of a back part of a rotoglotka and also two tools under remote control which allow to isolate safely and effectively a tumor from surrounding fabrics.

Robots surgeons became better to treat people throat cancer

In a retrospective observation research data from the National database on cancer including 9745 surgical patients were used. During the period from 2010 to 2015 transoral robotic operation was performed to 2694 patients. After correction of data on differences in the state of health and other characteristics the five-year survival in this group was 84.5% whereas in group without use of the robotic systems - 80.3%.

Researchers also confirmed that the robotic systems began to be used even more often for operation for an early stage of cancer of a rotoglotka. In 2010 the share of patients to whom similar operations were performed made 18.3%, and by 2015 it grew to 35.5%. Also the number of medical institutions which perform robotic procedures - from 6.3% to 13.9% almost twice grew.[1]
