Information Lifecycle Management

Information Lifecycle Management (ILM)  is information lifecycle management, a method of the management of information resources of the enterprise which is aimed at satisfaction of requirements and at reduction of total ownership cost. The ILM systems represent a software package and hardware for optimization and providing lifecycle from a point to a point.

In the system of information technologies of ILM  is different information movement and values in the storage system (SS) on the basis of the modified requirements of business to criteria of security and availability of information taking into account its value, relevance and expense optimization on its storage.

The concept ILM is based that information has a certain period of life. At first there is a creation of information which is in use of the client a certain time frame and as a result there is its destruction. During the lifecycle informative value for business is not stable and process of ILM is in defining to an information resource the service level according to informative value changes. In other words, protection and access to the most important data should be much more reliably and quicker, than protection and data access, being of smaller importance. In the course of lifecycle the value of each information for business processes during different time frames can change therefore the service level of this information resource should change respectively.

Main goal of ILM is guaranteeing relevance and data availability by means of preserving of information at the different levels of DWH and also reduction of expenses on storage systems to the minimum level using optimization of placement of data in DWH. Is among the main ILM areas: archiving of e-mail, files and relational database management system, resource management of storage and records, multilevel equipment.

  • Owing to reduction of number of the repeating files and also detection of the used and not used files and the relevant management the best management of growth of amounts of data happens them.
  • Simple movement  — starting with already available infrastructure, it is possible to increase it due to introduction of ITIL compatible methods of use of open systems.
  • Absolute expense control  — is connected with more productive use of resources of storage and also ensuring similarity between the service level of the stored data and changing since the value of data.
  • Qualitatively improved use of data  — thanks to implementation of requirements to preparation, performance, risk management of data loss and ensuring needs for long-term data storage.

ILM solutions

The ILM solution  is a set based on the templates meeting business needs of practical methods of management which give the chance to modify many aspects of introduction and administration of infrastructure of data storage. The enterprises can begin processes of reforming of infrastructure of storage for the purpose of information lifecycle management with several starting points.

The solution on information lifecycle management gives the chance to enter processes, politicians, techniques and tools for the purpose of cost-efficient arrangement of data in the environment of storage according to their value for business - from the moment of emergence of data before their destruction.

As a rule, first of all the companies aim to satisfy to the needs for long-term storage of e-mail, management of the investments which are stored in letters and the size of mailboxes. In this case it is possible to begin with ERP applications as in them large volumes of data gather eventually. For performance improvement and reduction of load of storage resources in these applications it is possible to use means of archiving. To reduce expenses, the organizations quite often begin with introduction of multilevel infrastructure of storage. For a bigger economy of expenses, the organizations can enter further methods of management of distribution of data on levels of storage and to different devices and their movements between storage levels at the different levels of lifecycle.

Generally, ILM is based on basic assessment of the available resources of storage and data. Usually it is implemented together with implementation of new opportunities of disaster recovery, new distributions of data from a position of security or accomplishment of new regulatory requirements to archiving of data for their long-term storage.

Hardware-software solutions

Scope

There is no absolute implementation of information lifecycle management now. However certain technologies are used already today. These technologies will provide rather notable advantages and will give the chance to easier implement transition to ILM strategy in the future. Step infrastructure of storage  — the main part of the first stage of implementation of ILM strategy. Such system sets the sequence of storage systems based on quality requirements of service, such as constancy of business, performance, protection of data, security of the stored information, compliance to regulations.

Actually infrastructure is consolidation of a quantity of storage systems in network. These systems at the cost and the service level which they provide differ. For any information type and the application relating to it the most suitable storage is selected. Because absolute implementation of ILM in the heterogeneous application environment is impracticable, key suppliers of storage systems provide tools for management of storage of the structured and unstructured information. For management of reference information new specialized solutions are prepared. Methods of management of the structured information  are software products which execute data transfer in storage infrastructure on statutory rules. The file system of servers or the table of databases can be submitted as the structured information.

In one case a part of the file system will move to the storage systems suitable at the moment in step. In other case data transfer will be executed of tables in archive or in other DBMS. Management tools unstructured information are applied to transferring of data which have no expressed structure, and too require integration at the level of applications. In the market there are already software products for management of mail archives (for example, EMC EmailXtender).

Management of reference information is executed by means of program, or software and hardware tools  — Content Addressed Storage (CAS). Distinctive feature of these systems is that they give the chance to find documents on contents, indexing them at the time of placement in storage. First of all they are used in archives of unstructured information. Implementation of the management concept lifecycle of information in infrastructure of data center  — long and difficult process but to begin it and it is possible to achieve positive result benefit from implementation already now.
