2020: The announcement of a method of suppression of secondary inflammation at COVID-19

On September 29, 2020 it became known that scientific NITU "MISIS" together with colleagues from Federal research center "Crystallography and Photonics" RAS and I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University offered a method of diagnostics and treatment of patients with a coronavirus which will help to prevent development of the secondary inflammation of fabric extremely dangerous to sick COVID-19. Article is published in the Frontiers in Immunology magazine.

As it was explained, scientists suggested to use inhibitors of activity of MAIT cages at secondary infections at sick COVID-19. As authors of a research note, in a human body and other mammals there is a kind of the immune cages connected with mucous membranes — MAIT cages, – which perform protective functions on search, recognition and destruction of bacteria, fungi and other pathogens. Reacting to their emergence, MAIT cages cause fabric inflammation. At people they are found, for example, in blood, a liver and lungs.

Heavy patients with COVID-19 often need invasive mechanical ventilation of lungs which lasts on average 9 days and can lead to the diseases purchased in hospital and on the ventilator. Secondary (developed already during a coronavirus) bacterial or fungal infections were detected in every seventh patient with a coronavirus. In this case additional inflammation of fabric which MAIT cages can cause is capable to lead to a complication of a status of the patient with COVID-19.

In general these cages are useful as they protect us from bacterial or fungal infections. But in case of already developed viral infection and the high level of inflammation the activity of MAIT cages can aggravate a course of disease. On the published scientific data there are bases to assume that this activity really develops — about it it is possible to judge by a profile of tsitokin and also proceeding from spread of secondary infections at sick COVID-19, but it certainly requires further studying.

Roman Akasov, one of coauthors of the publication, the expert of Biomedical Nanomaterials laboratory of NITU "MISIS" told

The expert notes that activation of MAIT-of cages was earlier described at viral infections, including herpes, hepatitis and lethal flu. Recently appeared several works in which communication between MAIT-cages and COVID-19 in which it was shown that these cages collect in lungs was studied, and extent of their activation is interconnected with disease severity though the nature of this communication is not known yet.

Authors of a research in the publication note that studying of interaction between the owner (person) and his microbiota (set of microbes in an organism) is of great importance for understanding of development of a coronavirus and treatment of this disease. The accompanying infections play an important role in gravity of respiratory diseases while their participation in development of COVID-19 still is little discussed.
