2020: The announcement of a method of water purification using active coals

On October 2, 2020 it became known that researchers of the Russian Chemical and Technology University (RCTU) tested a water purification method using active coals which mix with water. From water coals adsorb molecules of pollutants then through liquid the electric current causing formation of electrolytic gases which bubbles pick up carbon particles is passed and bring them to the surface. Results of a research are published in the Separation and Purification Technology magazine.

The Russian scientists found a water purification method from drain waters using active coals

According to the Russian scientists, this method allows in 5 minutes for 90% to purify water from the carbon particles which absorbed toksikant. During the experiment it was studied how affects efficiency of process concentration and the nature of components of model solutions and also current intensity, passed through liquid. Data retrieveds showed that the found method is perspective for fast and high-quality cleaning both model solutions, and real sewage.

We made a series of experiments on the model solutions containing active coal, salt for giving to the system of conductivity and also different organic and inorganic coagulants and flokulyanta (the substances promoting adhesion among themselves in volume insoluble flakes of the carbon particles weighed in water. It was interesting to us how the efficiency of process of water purification is affected by these or those factors. For example, it turned out that optimal rn systems fluctuates in an interval either from 3 to 4, or from 7 to 9 and is defined by the sizes of carbon particles and bubbles of electrolytic gases and also a charge of a surface of carbon particles.

Sewage treatment is expensive process: by estimates of the American Environmental Protection Agency, up to 5% of the general energy consumption of the USA it is the share of the systems of water purification. For September, 2020 for water purification most often use different carbon materials which have a hydrophobic surface and adsorption capacity, recommended for removal from solutions of ions of heavy metals, viruses, bacteria, fluoride ions and other pollutants. For this purpose carbon particles mix with the contaminated liquid where they quickly and effectively absorb toksikant, but then this mix needs to be separated from purified water. For September, 2020 for this purpose use the upholding and filtering requiring a lot of time (from several hours to several days), and proceeding in comparison with the Russian method less effectively.

The Russian scientists used an electroflotation method when they through solution pass the electric current causing formation of electrolytic gases (hydrogen and oxygen) which vials take pollutants and bring them to the surface.
