The company is founded in 2011 by graduates of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Ilya Volodarsky, Jan Storm Taylor (Ian Storm Taylor), Peter Reinhardt, Calvin French-Owen. The startup develops a cloud platform for the analysis, structuring and real-time processings of these users.

History

2020: Twilio purchased Segment for $3.2 billion

On October 12, 2020 the internet telephony service provider of Twilio announced acquisition of Segment for $3.2 billion. Close the transaction which the buyer completely will pay with own money (without attraction of the actions), it is planned until the end of the year.

Within the transaction Morgan Stanley|Morgan Stanley & Co LLC acted as the financial advisor of Twilio, and Cooley LLP rendered legal services to the buyer.

After the declaration of purchase of Segment of the stock Twilio rose in price for 9%, and market capitalization made nearly $46 billion.

By October, 2020 at Segment totals over 20 thousand clients among whom there are such large companies as Intuit, FOX, Instacart and Levi’s. In staff of Segment — more than 500 employees. Total investments into Segment for all history of the company by October 13, 2020 exceed $284 million. According to the results of a final round of financing investors estimated the company at $1.5 billion.

As notes the Bloomberg agency, COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic affected positively cloud company Twilio as her clients, including retailers and medical institutions, prefer to use online tools for ensuring sales and communications with the clients. Twilio, having made communication a part of tools of each software developer due to virtual use of world communication infrastructure on the basis of API, allows developers to invent methods of interaction of the companies with the clients.[1]
