2020: Announcement of a method of processing of volume metal glasses

On October 22, 2020 it became known that the method of processing of volume metal glasses was offered scientific NITU "MISIS". They can be applied as coverings to expensive smartphones, tablets and also production of biocompatible implants. Results of a research are published in the Journal of Alloys and Compounds magazine. Metal glasses (amorphous metals) – materials which unlike "classical" materials have no pattern in arrangement of atoms far remote from each other. Because of it they differ in durability, elasticity, resistance to corrosion and other properties thanks to which I will be useful in instrument making, mechanical engineering, medicine and magnetic electrical equipment.

Method of processing of volume metal glasses

As it was explained, one of obstacles to broad use of these materials their fragility. Authors of a research consider that this method of processing of metal glasses will help to solve this problem. The method is tested on amorphous alloy of a system zirconium - copper - iron-aluminum (Zr-Cu-Fe-Al).

Use of annealing before rolling was "forbidden" by science canons about metal glasses as in an absolute majority of cases it leads to their embrittlement. The choice of alloy composition and system of alloying helped us to bypass this problem: annealing about 100 degrees lower than glass transition temperature allowed to achieve plasticization of volume samples and hardening of tape instead of embrittlement.

Dmitry Luzgin, the research supervisor of a research, the Dr.Sci.Tech., professor of NITU "MISIS" explained

The method of processing of volume metal glasses was offered by scientists of MISIS

According to authors of a research, characteristics of the received material are affected by a method of decomposition of a matrix of alloy – tape or volume. Depending on it different results are achieved.

For volume samples by means of separation of a homogeneous amorphous phase into two increase in plasticity at stretching to 1.5% at the room temperature is reached. For tape samples increase in hardness by 25% is reached that is provided with selection of vitreous nanoparticles of the size about 7 nanometers of a secondary amorphous phase with preserving of plasticity on a bend and compression.

Andrey Bazlov, the author of a method, the research associate of department of metallurgical science of non-ferrous metals of NITU "MISIS" told

Alloy of the Zr-Cu-Fe-Al system cannot be used as the main structural material in view of cost, - authors of development explain, - however they are sure that the offered technology can be applied also to other amorphous alloys, in particular, by titanic (cheaper).

This method will allow to simplify process of giving of necessary properties to metal glasses, thereby having broadened the sphere of their use. Further research team intends to apply technology to production of titanic and other volume metal glasses.
