2020: Announcement of a system of recognition of nerves of NIM Vital

At the end of October, 2020 Medtronic released the system of recognition of nerves during head and neck operations. According to the press release, NIM Vital is the system of intraoperative monitoring of nerves which will allow doctors to identify nerves, to trace and control effects of manipulations on their function and also to confirm integrity of nerves before completion of transaction. Such feedback will allow to reduce significantly the frequency of ghost effects at head and neck operations.

Even at detailed knowledge of anatomy and extensive experience it is difficult to surgeons to identify motive nerves during transaction. It can be connected with manifestations of a disease, effects of the previous transaction or congenital anatomic features of the patient. Usually errors such lead to section of a nerve and loss of sensitivity or motive function on the one hand persons that significantly reduces quality of life of the patient.

Data of clinical trials confirm that intraoperative monitoring of nerves is the effective instrument of risk minimization. In the NIM Vital system the patented technology of Medtronic company which provides to the surgeon detailed data about a status of nerves in real time is used. Such feedback allows surgeons to adjust a course of transaction as required. At the same time the big touch screen and the optimized interface provide intuitive workflow with the improved visualization.

It is supposed that a new system will directly influence surgical strategy, thereby increasing efficiency and accuracy of surgeries. The NIM Vital system already got approval of regulatory bodies of the EU and the USA and is available in these markets.[1]
