2020: The choice of OpenStack for creation of cloud infrastructure

PJSC MTS, the Russian company on providing digital, media and telecommunication services, announced on November 5, 2020 the choice of the platform open source of OpenStack for creation of cloud infrastructure of the last generation on the basis of the concept of flexible architecture of cloud native that it will allow to diversify cooperation with vendors and to harmonize development network and IT infrastructures. According to the results of tender by the supplier of the platform the Canonical company developing projects of the open source on the basis of Linux distribution kit Ubuntu is selected.

MTS is going to unroll a cloud platform of the last generation based on the solution Canonical OpenStack in eleven data centers on all Russia and to put it into commercial operation during 2021. In the future use of the OpenStack platform will promote deployment of networks of the next generations, will give the chance to accelerate product development and services, to reduce charges of cloud infrastructure. Besides, MTS is going to increase the key technology examination in plot area of cloud platforms based on software open source and to create own Competence Center for development of solutions on the basis of OpenStack.

The closed hardware-software solutions on our network gradually are substituted with open components. Having selected the platform OpenStack, MTS implements the strategy of step-by-step migration of own infrastructure on the open source software. Development of an ecosystem based on OpenStack will stimulate implementation of technologies, deployment of 5G networks and creation on our network of a resource for boundary calculations. Use of OpenStack will give us the chance to optimize the cost of ownership of virtualization platforms, to use different versions of virtual platforms for implementation of telecom solutions and IT services. It will help the company to hold positions on the Russian telecom market, to increase adaptivity of IT infrastructure, to be ready to technology calls and requests of clients — the vice president for the equipment of MTS Victor Belov noted.

Canonical is very glad to cooperation with MTS company, having provided it the platform on which it is possible to unroll 5G network. Partnership will help to lay the foundation for cloud IT infrastructure, providing the last updates in the predictable and automated mode. Thanks to the built-in end-to-end system of security and use of the unified automated solutions of a core of network to remote peripheral devices our partnership brings MTS to the advanced positions in implementation of innovations open source, - the vice president for global alliances Canonical Regis Paquette told.

Around the world telecom operators make the choice for benefit of OpenStack. What began as flexible structure for deployment and management of network functions turned into the preferable platform for management of evolution of networks from LTE to a 5G. Canonical from the very first days was important solution provider of the free software, - the chief operating officer of Open Infrastructure Foundation Mark Collier noted.

Further development of an ecosystem based on OpenStack will allow to place the high-loaded telecom services and virtual network functions in DPC, to locate computing infrastructure most close to users and also to provide necessary level otkazo-and disaster tolerance. The infrastructure ecosystem will be separated into several technology landscapes, each of which will provide the required service level of clients depending on degree of criticality of the implemented applications and services.
