Raidix ERA Software RAID Support

On December 8, 2020, Western Digital announced the start of a partnership with RAIDIX, a software development company for storage, in order to maximize the potential of its Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) storage devices when used in RAID arrays. More details here.

Ultrastar DC ZN540 Presentation

On November 9, 2020, the company Western Digital announced the release of several new SSD NVMe-supported storage devices created for use in data storage and processing architectures in the DPC industrial, IoT automotive applications and customer classes. The family includes an SSD with support for zonal namespace (ZNS) and NVMe, which will help design a more productive storage tier in data centers with competitive total cost of ownership (TCO); An industrial-grade SSD drive from IX SN530 Western Digital for use in extreme loads from applications that help solve technical problems related to various industries, including the automotive industry; WD Blue SN550 and a 2 TB SSD with NVMe support to improve performance. According to IDC, over the next three years, humanity will create more data than in the past thirty years. Billions of connected systems generate countless sets of contextualized data from video surveillance to the user and sensor information that needs to be received, converted and analyzed, and then these data and information will begin to be of value to various industries, companies and individual users. Older versions of architectures no longer keep pace with modern data volumes and cannot function in appropriate environments. The challenge is to build a data storage and processing infrastructure that, on the one hand, is efficient and cost-effective and, on the other, can meet the growing information needs of the zettabyte era. Storage is a critical and fundamental component for creating such new architectures and extracting valuable information from data.

Zoned Storage is a storage architecture adapted for next-generation enterprise data centers. Western Digital announced that it not only continues to oversee the Zoned Storage and ZoneStorage.io initiative, participate in the NVMe working group and ZNS specification, and the open-source Linux community as part of the further development of the ecosystem, but also begins sending samples of the new Ultrastar DC ZN540 SSD with support for ZNS and NVMe testing to selected customers. The Ultrastar DC ZN540 SSD with support for ZNS and NVMe, up to 8 TB capacity in the U.2 form factor standard, uses a vertically integrated dual-port high-availability NVMe controller. With the efficient use of the standard industry zonal namespace specification (ZNS), the new DC ZN540 has become a next-generation SSD drive, ideally suited for multi-tenant environments and other data-intensive tasks such as event flow processing. The performance of this SSD is 4x higher than that of traditional SSDs, and the quality of service has improved by 2.5x, not to mention increased efficiency and utilization and greater scalability support, while the total cost of ownership in a public and private cloud infrastructure has decreased. Western Digital reaffirms its commitment to deploying comprehensive support for the Zoned Storage ecosystem and application, including managing the synergies of SMR HDD drives and high-volume ZNS SSD drives through the standardized Zoned Storage integrated framework.
