In the middle of November, 2020 the American network of retail stores Walmart announced cooperation with the developer unmanned vehicles Cruise (enters into concern GM) to test the autonomous product delivery in Skottsdale (State of Arizona).
Within the pilot program clients will be able to place the order in local shop Walmart, and will deliver its one of the pilotless Chevy Bolt electrocars of Cruise company. But though cars will work independently, driving there will be an operator who is responsible for safety of people around and ready to interfere at any time with driving.
The companies did not provide information on the size of vehicle fleet or service area, but explained that they will test a new delivery mode in Skottsdale, the suburb of Phoenix. It is expected that the pilot program will begin winter-spring of 2021.
It is technology which can not only save time and money of clients, but also to bring benefit to all planet in general, so, we should study it, - the senior vice president of Walmart for client products in the USA Tom Ward said. He also reported that this pilot project will help Walmart "reach zero emissions by 2040". |
This program - not the first example of how Walmart tries to expand services of shipment at own expense and delivery. In April, 2020 Walmart started the program under the name Express which provides delivery of orders within two hours for additional $10. Walmart also established partnership with several developers of pilotless vehicles, including Waymo to estimate a possibility of use of new technology in commercial scales. So far it is not clear how the pilot Cruise program with Walmart will be long and whether it will extend.[1]
