2020: Start of construction of floating data center on Keppel DC hydrogen
In the middle of November, 2020 Keppel Data Centers signed the memorandum with the Singapore companies City Gas and City-OG Gas Energy Services to create the first-ever commercial floating data center of Keppel DC using liquefied natural gas and hydrogen fuel.
The idea for the first time was put forward in 2019, and in April, 2020 the Keppel DC company signed the agreement with Toll Group to develop the plan of a floating object and also began to cooperate with Royal Vopak company to study a possibility of use of liquefied natural gas in power infrastructure of the city of Singapore.
City Gas sells natural gas to commercial and industrial consumers in Singapore through City-OG, City Gas and Osaka Gas joint venture. City Gas completely belongs to Keppel. According to the last memorandum three companies intend to study and estimate jointly procurement strategies of liquefied natural gas and potential transition to hydrogen fuel. The parties will also consider the possibility of use of "cold" energy from hydrogen production for cooling of a floating data processing center.
Cooperation between Keppel DC, City Gas and City-OG will allow Keppel Group to expand measures for decrease in a carbon trace of data processing centers, - explained the CEO of Keppel DC Wong Vi Meng. - We make use of our general experience for development of the data processing centers using liquefied natural gas and hydrogen and also for use of such technologies as catching, utilization and sequestration of carbon. |
In June, 2020 Keppel DC also signed the memorandum with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific to consider implementation of the concept of hydrogen power station for data processing centers in Singapore.[1]
