2020: The announcement of AMD Instinct MI100 - the graphic processor for supercomputers

In the middle of November, 2020 provided to AMD as the company claims, the most powerful graphic processor for supercomputers. It is about the Instinct MI100 accelerator which peak capacity exceeds 10 TFLOPS.

According to SiliconANGLE, supercomputers used mainly for the scientific purposes, such as simulations of physical processes and forecasting of weather were created generally on central processors (CPU) earlier. By November, 2020 more and more systems are equipped with graphic solutions (GPU) as they are suitable for machine learning in scientific calculations better. Such trend promotes increase in demand for the products similar to AMD MI100, notes the edition.

Provided to AMD the most powerful graphic processor for supercomputers - AMD Instinct MI100

New AMD CDNA is the basis for this processor. The AMD Matrix Core MI100 technology which, according to developers, allowed to achieve almost sevenfold increase in theoretical peak capacity in FP16 format from a floating comma for workloads of training of AI in comparison with AMD accelerators of the previous generation is also provided.

AMD Instinct MI100 is intended for work with x16 PCIe 4.0 interface (64 Gbytes / c). As a part of GPU Instinct MI100 120 executive blocks (Compute Units) which contain the new blocks for matrix transactions which are used in tasks of acceleration of the calculations connected with AI algorithms are used.

The Instinct MI100 accelerator is equipped with the graphic processor with four stacks of memory of HBM2 with a total capacity of 32 GB. The maximum capacity of memory makes impressive 1.23 TB/pages. Peak frequency of operation of the graphic processor reaches 1.5 GHz, memory works at frequency of 1.2 GHz.

Does not call terms of the beginning of sales of the product AMD by November 17, 2020.[1]
