2021: Launch of Russia's first dedicated 5G commercial network

Polymetal"" launched the first Russia commercial network in the Private Network. 5G This was announced on September 27, 2021. The implementation of the project for one of the largest gold and silver producers in the world was carried out by companies and. MTS Ericsson

According to the press service of the telecom operator, a 5G-ready data transmission and processing network was created for Yuzhno-Verkhoyan Mining Company JSC (part of Polymetal), which integrates various production systems: dispatching open mining operations, positioning and managing various objects - excavators, drilling machines, measuring devices, monitoring systems for remote equipment and video monitoring.

MTS used the Ericsson Dedicated Networks solution, which complies with 3GPP standards and is a full-fledged operator-class network core (Ericsson Enterprise Core) with support for 4G and 5G NSA technologies (non-autonomous architecture) and the ability to switch to 5G SA technology (standalone 5G architecture).

It is claimed that the network launched for Polymetal meets such important requirements as reliability and timeliness of information delivery from industrial devices and sensors, seamless transfer of any type of traffic from mobile and autonomous devices, wide bandwidth and low delay, safety and integrity of the information delivered, scalability of the network when expanding the mining area.

2020: Start of construction of Russia's first corporate 5G network

The construction of Russia's first corporate 5G network has begun. This was announced on November 23, 2020 by MTS, which entered into a corresponding agreement with the Polymetal gold mining group.

As part of the project, the Russian telecom operator will deploy a commercial 5G-ready dedicated (Private Network) network for Yuzhno-Verkhoyan Mining Company JSC (part of Polymetal) at the Nezhdaninskoye gold deposit in Yakutia. It will integrate an internal IP telephony network, employee mobile devices, mining dispatching, positioning, remote and automated control systems for various objects (excavators, drilling machines, measuring devices, automated fire fighting and video monitoring systems). It is expected that the wireless network will improve industrial safety and optimize production processes.

Taking into account the difficult climatic conditions and the changing mountain terrain, the deployment of the dedicated network as a single high-speed platform for various technological needs will significantly increase the speed of transmission of large amounts of information, fault tolerance of the technological network and reduce its maintenance costs. One of the first projects on the basis of the network will be the introduction of remote control of drilling machines and dispatching, "said Alexander Laguta, head of the information technology and communications department of the Yakutsk branch of Polymetal UK.

The dedicated 5G-ready technology network will be built on the basis of the Ericsson Dedicated Networks system, which is the core of the operator-class network (Ericsson Enterprise Core) with support for 4G and 5G NSA technologies (non-autonomous architecture), as well as the ability to switch to 5G SA technology (standalone architecture 5G).

First, the network built for Polymetal will work in the LTE standard, and then it will be transferred to 5G. The timing of the project by November 23, 2020 is not called.[2]
