Biography

1964-1968

In 1964 after release from Columbia University of Lynn Conway joined IBM where she entered considerable innovations to computer design, having provided promising career in the international conglomerate. Despite a marriage and presence of two daughters, Conway haunted a question of its gender identity. In 1968 it made the decision to change sex. It announced the plans to company management.

Conway got support from Gene Myron Amdal who at that time held a position of the director of the company on the advanced computing systems. However, the chief executive of the company Thomas Watson Jr. was less tolerant, as a result Conway announced dismissal.

1970-1985

After leaving IBM Conway nevertheless performed gender surgery, in the early seventies the researcher started recovery of the career. In 1971 the ex-employee of IBM began to work in technology company Memorex, in 1973 Conway got a job in the research center Xerox in Palo Alto. In Xerox she took part in creation of design methods of chips. In 1985 Conway became professor of electrical equipment and information science in the University of Michigan.

2000

In 2000 Lynn Conway created the website devoted to a subject of gender identity, thanks to this resource activity Conway gained wide recognition.

2020: Apology of IBM for dismissal

In the middle of November, 2020 it became known that IBM apologized to the female transgender Lynn Conway who was dismissed because of the gender identity 52 years ago.

The management of IBM paid attention to history Conway only 52 years later, the researcher was invited to an online meeting with other staff of the company. During this meeting the company also apologized before Conway. At this conference the technology giant apologized to the former worker.[1][2]
