2020: Output of the Cerebras CS-1 processor to the market
At the end of November, 2020 engineers of Cerebras provided the most powerful processor for artificial intelligence with 381 thousand cores. This solution already began to be used by clients of the company.
Scientists managed to develop the biggest in the world the computer Cerebras CS-1 chip which size is 462 square centimeters. Researchers said that this invention is capable to predict future. According to developers, the first testing of the chip showed that it is capable to predict events earlier, than they will occur.
Scientists made modeling of burning in the power unit. As a result the chip began to work with 1.2 trillion transistors 200 times quicker than the most advanced supercomputer. Thanks to the force he could repeat behavior model in real time and also showed changes in the future.
Cerebras states that the new CS-1 processor can accelerate training of models of deep learning considerably. Researchers said that performance of CS-1 is not comparable with other processors. They organized a competition between the computer based on CS-1 and the NETL Joule 2.0 supercomputer which takes the 82nd place on performance in the world. If NETL Joule 2.0 occupies tens of server racks, consumes up to 450 kilowatts of energy and requires tens of millions of dollars for assembly, then CS-1 finds room in one third of a server rack, consumes 20 kilowatts of energy and costs several million dollars.
Both machines received an identical task on burning modeling. The new processor coped with a task for 28 microseconds, and the competitor for six milliseconds, i.e. won against CS-1 with more than 200-fold overweight. At the same time it simulated burning quicker, than it would happen in the nature, and it as developers consider, opens absolutely new horizons for studying and management of superfast processes in real time.
Besides, the majority of large-scale computing tasks depend on massive parallel processing. Especially high requirements to the equipment are imposed by developers of artificial intelligence. Sometimes programmers should refuse the perspective ideas because for their implementation there are not enough computing powers, and CS-1 is designed to break this barrier. Cerebras also announced release of the chip of the next generation which will have 2.6 trillion transistors, 850,000 cores and it is twice more than memory.
The chip obtained data thanks to physical laws, having added to them all possible variables. As a result developers received the Cerebras CS-1 chip which can work both in real time, and quicker it.
Creators added that this chip is only the first device of the last generation. For the end of November, 2020 at them in development more improved version of the device. The following device will be equipped in 2.6 trillion transistors that will bring calculations to absolutely other[1][2].
