2020: Attack of a virus racketeer
At the end of November, 2020 the French IT giant Sopra Steria recognized that the October attack of a virus racketeer will cost the company tens of millions of dollars. The company reported that the attack will negatively affect its gross profit for 2020, having lowered it for the amount from 40 million euros to 50 million euros. At the same time about 30 million euros losses will be covered with a special insurance, noted in the company.
It is known that Sopra Steria suffered from cyber attack of a new virus racketeer from the Ryuk family famous on the previous cyber attacks. The virus disconnected all systems of the company and though Sopra Steria claimed that it could block "quickly" the attack at detection, effects were very serious. The company had to take many measures to improve the situation and to prevent the similar attacks in the future. Besides, after the attack of Sopra Steria it was necessary to deal with "access lock at the different levels".
Immediately taken measures allowed to limit spread of a virus and to lock it in limited section of infrastructure of group, thereby having protected clients and partners, says the company. |
Sopra Steria claimed that it did not reveal date leak or damages of the client systems. How slowly there is a work on recovery of systems, the company decided not to pay the redemption to hackers.
The works on safe recovery started on October 26 are almost complete, - the representative of Sopra Steria notes. - Gradually we recover access to workstations, research and production servers and also internal tools and applications. Customer relations are also gradually reestablished. |
Together with losses of aluminum giant Norsk Hydro ($41 million) and Cognizant IT companies (to $70 million) effects of the kiberatataki on Sopra Steria are considered as one of the most serious from the financial point of view.[1]
