2020: Implementation of VMware SD-WAN in 36 enterprises and branches

The NLMK Group announced on December 3, 2020 implementation of VMware SD-WAN from company VMware, Inc. in 36 enterprises and branches. The project objective was to make network more intellectual, transparent and safe and also to increase quality of work of Real-time of applications.

The last years NLMK actively is engaged in digitalization of production and business process automation. To support new technologies and tools, it is necessary to provide reliability and efficiency of network. It demanded replacement of the existing network infrastructure by more automated and flexible. Therefore the decision on implementation of the VMware SD-WAN platform which helped to optimize network functioning significantly was made.

The project was implemented in short terms in 36 enterprises and branches in spite of the fact that on each object are used from tens to thousands of computers. Now with VMware SD-WAN even big traffic of backup does not reduce performance of Real-time of applications, such as Skype and Zoom. At the same time in NLMK report that the quality of a video conferencing and calls considerably improved. Besides, VMware SD-WAN accelerates delivery of applications for the transfer account of data on two network channels at the same time.

"During the project we were pleasantly surprised with simplicity of implementing solution. On average the preliminary configuration of the equipment took a couple of hours, and switching to VMware SD-WAN — half an hour with a break of service for several minutes. The project managed to be completed in only three months, and now we can easily connect new objects to network or change their configuration" — Leonid Medvensky, the head of department of IT infrastructure and information security of NLMK Group commented.

For service of the implemented solution there are enough two IT specialists, and on VMware SD-WAN support they spend only 20% of working time. It is possible thanks to the tool for centralized operation of VMware SD-WAN Orchestrator which allows to configure firewalls and routers of all network of one point while earlier specialists had to make changes separately on each device. As IT specialists note, VMware SD-WAN provides the complete information about what occurs in any point of network. Thanks to it information security specialists can detect and block unauthorized data exchange between the enterprises and branches in advance.
