2020: Project startup

At the beginning of December, 2020 it became known that the Finnish telecommunication company Nokia will head the European project Hexa-X aimed at the development of mobile telecommunication systems of the sixth generation (6G).

Project Hexa-X assumes creation of scenarios of use 6G and development of fundamental technologies for these networks, the project received financing from European Commissions. Among participants there is Hexa-X following of the company: Ericsson Intel Siemens mobile operators Orange, Telefonica and also University of Oulu and University of Pisa.

Europe started project Hexa-X on development of 6G-networks

The head of research of access networks in Bell Labs Nokia Peter Vetter noted:

In spite of the fact that the sphere of development of a 5G assumes a lot more innovations, including release of new standards, we already study 6G in our research laboratory. During an era 6G we will see applications which not only will connect people to machines, but also will connect people to the digital world. Safe and private connection of this sort can be used for preventive treatment or even for creation of network 6G with the sixth sense which intuitively understands our intentions, doing our interaction with the physical world to more effective, foreseeing our requirements, thereby increasing our performance.

Bell Labs Nokia together with other participants of Hexa-X defined six research tasks which need to be solved to lay the technical foundation for wireless systems 6G:

  • Network of networks: it is necessary to integrate several types of resources to create a digital ecosystem which becomes more and more functional, intellectual and diverse finally scientists want to receive "a single network of networks".

  • Stability: creation of the digital infrastructure optimized in terms of energy consumption for decrease in global impact of ICT on the environment and also providing effective and steady instruments of digitization for the world industry, society and politicians.

  • Global covering of services: creation of effective and available solutions for global provision of services.

  • Extreme experience: extreme bitrates, extremely low (imperceptible) delays and also exact localization and sounding

  • Reliability: ensuring confidentiality and integrity of communication and ensuring confidentiality of data, operational stability and security.[1]
