2020: The announcement of processors based on RISC-V

On December 9, 2020 the Seagate Technology company announced creation of two processors based on open system of the RISC-V commands.

Processors based on RISC-V

According to the company, one of cores, with support of open standards, is intended for achievement of proper performance, and another — for optimization of the occupied space. The processor is already constructed based on a crystal with RISC-V support, and its work is checked in hard drives. The core optimized on the area is developed and for December, 2020 is in implementation process.

As both processors support safety features of RISC-V which are shown in reliability, security and mobility of data from the periphery to a cloud.

In comparison with existing solutions, the specified core provides triple performance improvement for critical workloads of the hard drive in real time. In the initial scenario of use it is a core allowed Seagate to increase available computing power. The processor opens a way to more exact positioning for the realization account of the updated algorithms of the servo actuator (traffic control).

The core with optimization on the area has flexibly configured microarchitecture and feature set. It is optimized both for economy of the place, and for economy of energy, supports the auxiliary, supporting or background workloads. It can execute peripheral computing transactions, sensitive to security (including a post-quantum cryptography of the next generation), using at the same time less resources.

Cores of Seagate will also help to make quicker real-time analysis in data processing centers and on the periphery. It is especially necessary for scientific communities which work with huge amounts of data.

In the Los Alamos national laboratory combination of storage and data processing, changed a method of data analysis and optimized performance of accomplishment of scientific work. Integration of computing power into storage system allows to create permanent templates which accelerate processing many times. It considerably exempts our main computing resources from accomplishment of such tasks.
