2020: Development of radiophotonics technology for repeater satellite equipment
On December 14, 2020, the Russian Space Systems Holding (RKS, part of the Roscosmos State Corporation) announced the development of data transfer technology using radiophotonics for use in repeater satellite equipment. Innovations solve the problems of flexible and broadband frequency conversion inside a satellite repeater, as well as reduce the mass and size of satellite equipment.
To convert frequency and switch radio channels, a converter with a radiophoton core, radio frequency input and output sections is created in a satellite repeater. The application of such technology greatly enhances the technical capabilities of telecommunication satellites in the relay of a radio signal. Radiophoton equipment differs from traditional radio frequency with high noise immunity, resistance to space factors, optimal mechanical and energy characteristics (light weight, mechanical flexibility, reduced volume, low power consumption).
Communication satellite systems require the development of radioelectronic communication facilities in the range up to 40 GHz for receiving, routing and transmitting radio frequency signals of repeaters. Our development allows us to solve these problems, its parameters ensure the conversion of the carrier frequency of the input information signal in the on-board satellite repeater into several frequency ranges at the same time. said Andrei Shcherbinin, head of multi-band frequency converter development for onboard satellite repeater, lead research engineer

In the field of ultra-wideband data transmission systems, radiophoton and optical devices have several advantages over traditional radio frequency devices. Systems based on radiophoton technologies are not affected by external electromagnetic fields and have a much longer transmission range and signal bandwidth. At the same time, data transfer occurs with minimal loss of satellite communication signals.
Repeater satellites are used for information support of rocket and space technology, transmission of a television signal between telecenters, relay of signals of space navigation systems, communication, rescue and other tasks.
