History

2021: Obtaining Republic Status

At the end of November 2021, Barbados officially became a republic and removed the queen from the Great Britain post of head. states The island nation in the Caribbean was led by President-elect Sandra Mason.

Singer of Barbadian descent Rihanna was recognized as a national hero during the inauguration ceremony. Prime Minister Mia Mottley said Rihanna was "doing exemplary service for the good of Barbados" through her creativity, discipline and dedication to the country.

At the end of September 2021, the country's parliament unanimously supported amendments to the constitution, allowing it to abandon the monarchical form of government and turn the country into a republic, and almost a month later voted to appoint the island's Governor General Sandra Mason as the first president. Once out of the Queen's grip, the state will remain part of the British Commonwealth.

1996-2020: Gaining independence

Barbados has been ruled by England since the 17th century. In 1996, the country gained independence, but British Queen Elizabeth II remained the official head of state. In 2020, the Barbados authorities decided to abandon this system and stop formal subordination to the queen:
