The British army implements the mini-drones flying at a speed of 80 km/h

Customers: British army (British Army)

Contractors: UAVtek, BAE Systems
Product: Bug (mini-drone)

Project date: 2020/12

At the end of December, 2020 the producer drones UAVtek together with the company BAE Systems was delivered nano -drones Bug British army for field tests. The tiny unmanned aerial vehicle can become the irreplaceable handheld device for prospecting tasks which the infantryman can instantly put in action.

Bug represents the drone weighing 196 g (approximately as smartphone weight) with the 40-minute battery life and a range of 2 km. Bug is capable to gather the speed of 80 km/h (22 m/s), to transfer the image to several devices and to cope with wind in 65 km/h and rushes up to 83 km/h. Bug seemed the only nano-drone which could cope with bad weather during the recent action of Army Warfighting Experiment (AWE) in Great Britain.

The chief technologist of division of applied investigation of BAE Systems James Gerard noted:

Our experience in development of large volumes of the equipment for protection allowed to turn the remarkable project into a real product which our Armed forces can use. Even in the most severe weather the Bug nano-drone is capable to deliver the vital tactical data on what is round the corner or behind the following hill, working independently visually to transfer the updated information to troops.

Gerrard added that in combination with others BAE Systems technologies with information advantages, the video flow received thanks to Bug can be separated into several domains, allowing thus commanders on the land, at the sea and in air to increase situational awareness and to quickly exchange solutions.

Development teams will continue to work on improvement of this nano-drone, in particular investigate abilities to integrate Bug with other military equipment.[1]
