2021: Software development for medical devices with support of AI diagnostics for a colonoscopy

In the middle of January, 2021 the Japanese company NEC working in information technology field and electronic engineers announced development of Wise Vision Endoscopy - the software for medical devices with support of AI diagnostics for a colonoscopy. Software is connected to the existing endoscopic equipment and using AI in real time notes precancer and potentially malignant defeats in the pictures made during the endoscopic procedures.

According to the official statement of NEC, the colorectal cancer is the most widespread cancer in Japan and the second in prevalence in Europe. The colorectal cancer often arises from precancer defeats (kolorektalny neoplastic polyps). At the same time further progressing can be suppressed, deleting defeats at a polyp stage during the endoscopic procedures.

However earlier the endoscopist had to find polyps, often badly distinguishable because of the corresponding form and the size, without ancillary equipment owing to what about 24% of defeats remained undetected at inspection. In cooperation with the National oncological center of Japan developed AI which learned to define potential defeats after studying more than 10,000 endoscopic images for fight against this problem of NEC. It should increase detectability of polyps.

Software it is compatible to the endoscopic systems of three producers - Olympus (Evis Lucera Elite Video System Center CV-290), Fujifilm (Eluxe VP-7000 video processor) and Pentax (Medical Optivista EPK-i7010 video processor). To announce the endoscopist the revealed defeat, software gives a sound signal and marks the image. Sounds of notifications, volume and colors of markers can be configured at the request of the user at any time.[1]
