2023: Weighing passengers when checking in for a flight to "ensure the safety of air travel"

On August 11, 2023, Korean Air, South Korea's national and largest airline, announced the introduction of a new measure to "ensure the safety of air travel." When checking in for flights, passengers will be weighed, not just their luggage.

The new rules apply at Kimpho Airport when boarding domestic flights and at Incheon Airport when checking in for international flights. The measurements are made in accordance with regulations established by South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Korean Air will weigh passengers when checking in for flights, not just their luggage

Korean Air said in an official notice that the data will be collected anonymously and used exclusively "for the purpose of safely performing flights." In particular, information on the weight of passengers will help the airline take into account the load and distribution of mass inside the aircraft. It is noted that passengers can refuse to undergo the weighing procedure by informing Korean Air employees about this.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport recommended that all Korean air carriers weigh passengers along with hand luggage in order to improve their standards for managing the weight and balance of aircraft, Korean Air officials said.

Meanwhile, as noted, the requirements introduced caused discontent from many passengers who consider it an interference in their privacy. Other citizens wonder if they will be able to take more luggage with them if their weight is less than a certain value. Typically, aircraft carry about 1% more fuel on board than is strictly necessary for a particular flight. Accurately measuring the weight of passengers could potentially reduce fuel consumption, delivering hundreds of millions of dollars in annual savings. And this will improve the financial situation of airlines.[1]
