Magma is a software platform open source which allows operators to unroll easily mobile networks in hard-to-reach spots.

2021: As a core for LTE and a 5G

The Magma project from Facebook offers mobile open source kernels for LTE and a 5G of an operator class. Developing, Magma will work with Linux Foundation, using a management structure, neutral concerning suppliers. It became known on February 4, 2021.

One Part 5G is the hardware, another — standards which there is a lot of, and the third — the software. And actually without Open Source-технологий 5G would not move off dead center. Program and hardware components of a 5G approach thanks to a cellular core, a network program stack open source of Magma.

Magma was developed by Facebook to help telecom operators quickly and easily to unroll mobile networks. The project which Facebook opened in 2019 does it, providing the program focused core of the distributed mobile packets and tools for control automation by network. This containerized network function is integrated with the existing backend of a mobile network and facilitates start of services on network edge.

Magma operators can create and expand networks of mobile communication in scale. It is integrated with the existing LTE networks and recently unrolled 5G networks. Several associates of Magma also cooperate in a project team of Open Core Network of the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) project. The plan consists in determination, creation, testing and deployment of basic network products which integrate Magma with separate hardware and software solutions TIP Open Core.

Linux Foundation will help to control the next stage of organizational development Magma. Project management will be exercised within a neutral management system of fund. Arm, Deutsche Telekom, Facebook, FreedomFi, Qualcomm, Institute of a wireless internet of things at Northeastern University, Alliance of the software OpenAirInterface (OAI) and Fund of open infrastructure participate in the project (OIF).

Magma got big support of community from several ecosystem players and funds, including OIF, OAI, etc. We announce the next evolution of the project where running Linux Foundation this hosting of the project with neutral charge which is taken for a long time by community is created. OIF, OAI and LF will work with the communities of software developers to make the contributions to the main Magma project. It provides such application functions as a mobile core which supplement existing telecommunication and boundary software open source the Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP) or Akraino type.
explained Arpit Dzhoshipura, the general networks, Edge and IoT manager of Linux Foundation

Magma will give following features:

  • will give to operators of a possibility of expansion of capacity and a scope using LTE, a 5G, Wi-Fi and CBRS;
  • will allow operators to provide without binding to the supplier services of cellular communication on the basis of Open Source-ядра;
  • will allow operators to manage more effectively the networks due to bigger automation, a smaller downtime, bigger predictability and bigger flexibility when adding services and applications;
  • will provide consolidation of the existing operators of mobile networks (MNO) and suppliers of infrastructure for increase in efficiency of expanded infrastructure of mobile networks;
  • will provide support of technology 5G open source and implementation of future scenarios of use of wireless networks, such as Private 5G, Integrated Access Backhaul (IAB), Augmented Networks and Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN).

We already over a year promote a release of the project to other level and executed for our customers more than 20 projects of deployment of private LTE networks using Magma. It turns into the fact that, according to us, quickly there is Linux'om for a core of telecommunication network. Besides, giants of the industry, such as Arm and Qualcomm, help to provide compatibility of Magma with the platforms, and we expect, as other suppliers of radio access networks (RAN) and vendors of OSS will integrate around the project to help further acceleration of implementation[1].
