Cast iron and plastic sewage hatches: applications and advantages

Sewage hatches are integral parts of any engineering structure. It provides reliable protection of underground highways. As a rule, hatches are installed above wells of collector, drain, rotary, storage or inspection type. Sewer hatches are made of various materials, which are distinguished by the level of strength, duration of operation and cost.

Main types of sewer hatches

The type of manholes is determined by the type and purpose of elements of utility systems that need protection. Engineering structures can be conditionally divided into the following groups:

  • water supply networks;
  • stormwater drainages;
  • telecommunication complexes;
  • sewage lines.

Hatches for the first group cover functional units of heating and water supply structures. The depth of the inspection wells is within 1-2 meters. A few years ago, utilities preferred the installation of cast iron hatches. Today they are successfully replaced by products made from strong polymer compositions. Stormwater hatches prevent the penetration of various objects. Collector structures installed on drain systems of this type usually reach 6 m. In telecommunication highways, hatches provide protection for expensive equipment. They prevent the penetration of intruders. Lightweight plastic hatches equipped with reliable lid locking mechanisms are usually used to protect cable elements.

Sewage hatches prevent the leakage of unpleasant odors that accumulate in drain structures. They open access to aspiration equipment, which provides pumping out of pit structures. Budget plastic hatches, which are profitably different in cost from cast iron products, perfectly cope with protective tasks. Revision hatches that open access to water supply structures are highly popular.

Operational advantages of cast iron and plastic metal hatches

Each sewer hatch model has its advantages and disadvantages. Cast iron products are characterized by high weight. But on the other hand, they are able to withstand significant mechanical loads. Metal products serve for a long time without changing the original shape and structure. Traditionally, round cast iron hatches are used. If necessary, you can purchase protective products with a square and original shape.

Plastic sewer hatches confidently displace sewer products in the consumer market. Their main advantages include:

  • light weight;
  • increased strength;
  • duration of operation;
  • aesthetics of appearance;
  • available cost.

Plastic products are not of interest to attackers involved in the unauthorized collection of scrap metal. It provides reliable protection for any utility structures, regardless of their complexity.
