2021: Lawsuit against Yandex together with TeleSport Group

On March 12, 2021, it became known that La Liga supported another lawsuit by TeleSport Group against Yandex in the case of protecting the exclusive rights to broadcast matches of the Spanish Football League in the amount of 529 million rubles.

Yandex illegally used recordings and cuts of La Liga matches on its platform. Support for the claim of one of the foreign sports organizations brings the case of illegal use of content to the international level. Which in turn confirms: transparency and honesty of the media business is a global problem that requires combining the efforts of all market participants and an integrated approach to solving it.

In January 2021, the court has already satisfied Telesport's claim against Yandex and ordered the latter to pay 3.68 million rubles for 1 violation. In total, Yandex, acting as an advertizing agent, committed about 500 violations in connection with the display of video materials of tournament matches. Spain

The support of La Liga gives the cause an international scale. Copyright holders and licensees are joining forces to stop the misuse of content on the Internet. In all countries, regulators are tightly monitoring the use of rights on television. It is also time to take copyright holders seriously in the digital space, because everyone understands that this niche is becoming more and more significant, - commented the head of TeleSport Pyotr Makarenko.

Our joint lawsuit with TeleSport is a major contributor to the protection of La Liga content around the world and helps support our broadcast partners. We believe that these violations have become a case that should be paid attention to all participants in the sports broadcasting market. It is in our interests to ensure free access for fans to broadcast matches both on TV and online. At the same time, the rules must remain the same for all participants in the process - only those who received the rights to the content can broadcast matches and, thus, must also provide safe access to high-quality video for our viewers. We would like to draw public attention in Europe and Russia to this precedent in order to protect the rights of sports leagues and our fans, "commented La Liga audiovisual director Melsior Soler.

La Liga's involvement in the lawsuit points to the importance of precedent for international sports organizations and everyone involved in the sports broadcasting industry. The support of our foreign partners also confirms that this case draws attention to the potentially deplorable consequences for fans. It is important to understand that illegal enrichment of search engines through advertising on video materials to which the search engine did not acquire rights, like any case of piracy, will potentially lead to the withdrawal of licensees from the market and, as a result, the lack of safe access to high-quality content. In other words, the fans simply may not have the opportunity to watch the match of their favorite team, - commented on the essence of the case Igor Savochkin, head of the legal department of TeleSport.
