2022: Failure leaves millions of Canadians disconnected
In July 2022, a large-scale shutdown occurred in the work of the national Canadian telecommunications operator Rogers Communications, millions of people were left without communication.
Massive disruptions across Canada to communications systems have affected banks, police emergency lines, services and ordinary citizens. People gathered at coffee shops and public libraries to take advantage of alternative networks, while financial institutions reported problems with everything from ATMs to cashless payment systems, Reuters reported.
The Bank of Montreal said the outage affected financial institutions, toll-free numbers as well as transactions, while Royal Bank of Canada said its ATMs and online banking services were affected.
In downtown Ottawa, cafes did not accept debit and credit cards and refused customers who did not have cash.
2021: Purchase of Canadian telecom company Shaw Communications
In mid-March 2021, Rogers Communications announced the purchase of Shaw Communications for $16 billion. According to experts, the deal may be interrupted by regulatory authorities, which fear the merger of the largest Canadian telecom companies and a sharp increase in telephone accounts. Read more here.
