2020: VMware Solution Implementation for Remote Comfort
The BIMTeam project bureau of the PIK project used the VMware Horizon solution to deploy and scale more than 1,000 virtual desktops (VDI). This was announced on March 30, 2021 by VMware Russia. Now, with it, company employees from different cities and time zones can get the necessary software and performance to work directly from the cloud.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the "personnel shortage" among Russian companies has intensified. Therefore, the business, which almost completely switched to online, turned its view to the regions where many promising specialists live. The BIMTeam of the PIK project was no exception. In order for all employees to have equal access to the company's working tools and computing resources, it was necessary to find a solution that could help them get the same set of technologies on a home computer.
Of all the solutions on the market, BIMTeam of the PIK project chose VMware Horizon. It helped the company increase the size of the cloud by 2 times within a month, which covered 1000 jobs at once. Another advantage was that now the company's employees choose a comfortable place and city for living, since they are not tied to the location of their office and can work on interesting and large projects remotely.
Support for 3D graphics was also an important criterion in favor of a VMware solution. Horizon virtual desktops and applications support 3D graphics cards, which allows you to provide BIMTeam project PIC employees with any working tools even on the remote site.
The deployment of solutions was made possible thanks to Selectel, which leased 70 servers with Nvidia Tesla T4 GPU cards and 1000 VMware Horizon licenses to BIMTeam.
Thus, the BIMTeam of the PIK project was able to prove that the construction industry, like other industries, can work remotely. Through collaboration with Selectel and VMware, the company managed to achieve "digital equality" for its employees, when each of them, through VDI, receives on their personal computer all the necessary software and performance to work. So, in April, when many construction companies suspended work, the BIMTeam project PIK broke the performance record.
Our company was one of the first to transfer employees to remote work, this was our conscious strategy since 2018. Therefore, we met the sudden April lockdown in full combat readiness. Of course, due to the pandemic, we had to accelerate sharply and transfer 100% of the employees to work from home. But in the end it turned out to be quite painless. Including thanks to the VMware Horizon solution, which helped increase the volume of the cloud and provide everyone with virtual desktops, "comments Vsevolod Nechitailenko, project manager of the BIMTeam project of the PIK. |
Without VMware Horizon, employees would have to install and maintain the software package on their computer themselves, and the administration team would have been working with a huge number of devices. But now all the necessary capacity for work is supplied from the cloud - for this you will need only a medium-power computer with stable Internet, "commented Ivan Kolegov, VMware product manager, Selectel. |
