2021: Microsoft Pre-Release Distribution OpenJDK
On April 7, 2021, it became known that Microsoft released a preliminary version of its own OpenJDK distribution with long-term support. This was reported in the blog of the developers of the corporation.
The official Microsoft website presents free assemblies based on OpenJDK 11 for the x64 architecture for server and desktop applications in Windows, macOS and Linux. The company promises support for Java 11 until at least 2024. It also published links to the early-access distribution of OpenJDK 16 for systems based on ARM64 processors.
Microsoft claims that the distribution has passed JCK testing, which is used to verify compatibility with the Java 11 specification. The company positions Microsoft JDK as a simple replacement for any other OpenJDK distribution. At the moment, distributions are not recommended for use in "combat conditions" due to their experimental status.
Users cloud services Azure can already try out the new product through Azure Shell, and during 2021, Microsoft JDK will become the default distribution for Azure services, according to the developers' blog.[1]
