2021: Using BIM Technologies to Create North Dame 3D Models

The public organization responsible for the preservation and restoration of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Paris announced the signing of an official trusteeship agreement for the restoration of the cathedral with Autodesk, a global software supplier, as announced by the latter on April 12, 2021. This agreement will allow Autodesk to contribute to the restoration of the cathedral using technological solutions - design and construction - which include building information modeling (BIM), the intelligent process of 3D modeling of data and geometry, as well as technical expertise. Using BIM, a historical digital database is created that can be used for subsequent restoration if necessary.

This digital approach allows the public organization responsible for preserving and restoring the Cathedral of Our Lady of Paris to create conditions for all project participants to work together in the cloud, while relying on a single data storage system - the center of all project information. Thus, all partners involved in the project have access to current data and plans.

Data obtained before the fire using Reality Capture technology allowed Autodesk to create a 3D BIM model of Notre Dame Cathedral in that form. In addition, Autodesk used the latest images of the cathedral to create 3D models of the building after a fire for analysis and comparison.
