2021: Launch of PPP program for 6G development in the USA

At the end of April 2021, the US National Science Foundation (NSF) launched the largest public-private partnership program for the development of 6G and attracted nine major companies in the field of cloud and telecommunications technology to its implementation.

This next-generation fault tolerant and intelligent systems (RINGS) development program involves companies such as Apple, Ericsson, Google, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Nokia, Qualcomm, and VMware. In addition, the US Department of Defense and the National Institute of Standards and Technology will help them.

The United States launched a PPP program for the development of 6G and attracted Apple, Google, Intel, Microsoft, etc.

As part of the program, NSF will allocate about $40 million to finance academic research projects aimed at developing next-generation networks. Scientists and engineers working on the projects included in the program will not only be able to collaborate with the aforementioned industry and government agencies, but will also have access to four NSF wireless test sites to test their ideas.

NSF accepts applications for research projects due by July 29, 2021. It is expected that about 40 grants will be allocated. Acting Deputy Director of the NSF Computer and Network Systems Division, Thyaga Nandagopal, noted that ten years ago the fund actively invested in research that led to the emergence of 5G. Now NSF hopes to turn the same trick with the next generation of communication technologies, but already with a collective approach.

Peter Vetter, head of the access research laboratory at Nokia Bell Labs, added that the public-private partnership structure under the RINGS program gives the United States the opportunity to use the full power of the industry by combining network and cloud players under one flag together with academic researchers.[1]
