2021: Recall of defective Peloton Tread + and Tread simulators

In early May 2021, the American manufacturer of simulators Peloton launched a recall campaign against Tread + and Tread treadmills after reports of accidents that killed a child and injured 70 more people. The corresponding statement was released on the website of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

In the United States, the recall affected about 125 thousand Tread + treadmills and a little more than 1 thousand. Tread. The company also stopped selling defective sports equipment. Consumers should immediately stop using recalled simulators and contact Peloton for a full refund by November 6, 2022.

Peloton recalls Tread + and Tread treadmills

The Peloton Tread + treadmill went on sale in early 2021 at a price of $4295. The cost of the Peloton Tread treadmill was $2,495.

CPSC recognized Peloton simulators as dangerous in April 2021. The regulator came to this conclusion after investigating the death of a child on a simulator. In particular, it was about warnings of the track about "possible tightening of people, animals and objects under the back of the treadmill" and "possible disconnection of the touch screen, which can lead to injuries."

Peloton emphasized that the company's treadmills are safe if you follow all the necessary recommendations. The company said that children and animals should be kept away from working equipment, as well as remove the safety key from it when the simulator is not turned on.

On the day of the announcement of the recall of treadmills, Peloton shares on the Nasdaq exchange fell in price by almost 16% compared to the closing level of the previous session. The company's market capitalization decreased to $24.41 billion.

Simultaneously with the recall of sports equipment, it became known about the leak of Peloton user data into the network. The open access included data on the age, height, weight, city of residence and physical activity of the company's customers.[1]
