2021: Testing Energy Efficient Cooling Solutions

Engineers of DataLine, a member of the Rostelecom-Data Center group of companies, began experiments using alternative methods of cooling equipment. Compared to traditional air cooling, these solutions can reduce energy consumption by 25-35%, reported May 11, 2021 in DataLine. Both technologies increase the density of active equipment and can be used in racks with increased power up to 20 kW.

When submerged liquid or immersion cooling is used, IT equipment is placed directly in a container with a cooling dielectric liquid. According to the manufacturer, this technology can reduce the cost of building a data center to 30% and engineering infrastructure to 20%. Total savings on total capital costs from submerged cooling can range from 16 to 30%. Operating costs can be reduced by 30-50% by reducing energy consumption and infrastructure maintenance costs.

Cooling with loop tubes allows you to attach cooling elements directly to processors, disks, memory, and other hot parts of the server. This technology will also reduce capital costs by up to 50%: cooling requires fewer air conditioners. In the future, it will also reduce operating costs by 35% through power savings.

"During the experiments, engineers will test these technologies at an increased density of equipment in the rack. With successful testing, we will be able to scale the experience gained within the entire Rostelecom-Data Center group of companies and get a significant effect, "said Yury Samoylov the First Deputy General Director RostelecomDPC of" -. "" Both technologies are interesting in terms of placing highly loaded equipment, and in the near future we will be able to offer alternative cooling options to all customers who are interested in such energy-efficient solutions.
