2021: Announcement of joint implant removal system
At the end of May 2021, Orthofix introduced the Oscar Pro ultrasonic arthroplasty system, which should soon enter the markets of the United States and Europe. Oscar Pro was designed to reduce problems associated with inefficient arthroplasty and is designed to remove the remains of cement fasteners during complex joint revision operations.
Over time, the joint implant wears out and requires replacement. Removal of the implant can be difficult because it also requires the effective removal of the cement by which the implant is attached to the bone. Conventional methods of removing cement include the use of drills, borfries, curettes and osteotomes, and such methods are complex and time consuming. Oscar Pro uses ultrasonic vibrations to soften the cement holding the implant in place. The system also includes tools that allow surgeons to remove softened cement using specially designed probes.
According to the developers, the next generation system will bring to the market a technological platform that expands the functionality of the traditional OSCAR system. Oscar Pro's new design includes an improved user interface to improve surgical effectiveness and new data collection capabilities for later analysis.
Oscar Pro is a fourth-generation product from the OSCAR line, which since 1990 has been the gold standard in providing medical care for complex joint revision operations, "said Paul Gonsalves, Orthofix President of Global Orthopedics, in a press release. He noted that this technology is well established and has been successfully used for decades to remove cement-based joint implants.[1] |
