2022: Start of sales of MAN Lion's City E electric bus in Russia
On January 24, 2022, the company MAN announced that electrobus MAN Lion's City E had received the Russian certification for the facility. automobile transport Certification opens up opportunities for the operation of an electric bus on public roads, including on urban public transport routes.
The certification procedure lasted about seven months. The tests were conducted by NAMI-Fund, and the type approval of vehicles was issued by the certification body SATR-FUND.
This feature significantly expands the field of application of MAN electric buses in Russia, for example, at airports, on long city routes, in historical areas, including in St. Petersburg and Moscow, where the installation of charging stations in the central parts of the city is seriously limited.
Before bringing MAN Lion's City E to the Russian market, transport passed a set of test tests in hot climate and low temperatures. In Russia, MAN electric buses will be presented with insulated sides, double-glazed windows, additional heaters so that passengers can comfortably get to their destination.
"MAN Lion's City certification in Russia is a big event for us. MAN electric buses are already being sold throughout the EU and, we hope, will be in demand in Russia, " says Pavel Serev, commercial director of Man Trak & Bas RUS. |

Charging capability via electric vehicle connector
On November 26, 2021, MAN announced that the Lion's City E electric bus, which in May 2021 set power reserve standards during tests in real urban conditions, having covered over 550 km on one charge, can be charged through the CCS Type 2 universal electric car combo connector. The advantage of this approach is that the electric bus can be charged from the same station as the electric car, and for this you do not need a special adapter. The possibility of charging an electric bus from an electric car station has become possible due to the fact that MAN is developing the concept of "night" or "park charging," which is also used in electric vehicles.
According to the company, thanks to the modern sophisticated battery cell technology, the MAN Lion's City E electric bus is charged for less than three hours, subject to the use of charging up to 150 kW, and a range of 300 km per charge is provided for the entire life of the batteries, which is 10 years. At the same time, MAN electric buses use simple lithium batteries, which are used in most household devices. They are cheaper than nickel-cadmium or titanium batteries, which are installed in electric buses operating on the principle of fast charging.
Another possibility of the MAN Lion's City E electric bus is economic. The client does not need to develop and maintain the infrastructure, in particular, install pantograph charging stations on the route, which need to be purchased additionally. This feature significantly expands the field of application of MAN electric buses, for example, at airports, on long city routes, in historical areas where the installation of charging stations is seriously limited.
In addition, an electric motor is installed in the MAN electric buses, which, according to the traditional scheme, transmits the drive to the wheels through the reduction gear. Unlike electric buses, in which electric motors are installed on driving wheels, during the operation of the MAN bus there is no need for additional service of each powertrain and rear electric port bridge - a portal bridge unified with diesel and gas machines is installed in MAN electric buses.
Operation of electric buses with electric port bridge with electric motors on each driving wheel requires additional training of personnel, extra costs for maintenance and purchase of specific spare parts. Before bringing the MAN electric bus to the market, in particular in Russia, the transport passed a set of test tests in hot climate and low temperatures.
In Russia, MAN electric buses are presented with insulated sides, double-glazed windows, and additional heaters. The operation of air conditioning and climate control systems occurs through an electric pump, which takes energy from batteries. A similar action occurs with heating - high-voltage heaters are installed in the MAN electric bus, heating the liquid and redistributing it along several independent circuits. In case of maximum low temperatures or in conditions of transition through zero degrees, a 30-kilowatt diesel heater is installed in the MAN electric bus, this allows the transport to operate uninterrupted in the most adverse weather conditions.
MAN Lion's City E View
On May 24, 2021, MAN introduced the MAN Lion's City E electric bus.
The electric bus has an overall length of 12,200 mm and a permissible total weight of 19,500 kg.
MAN Lion's City E can carry up to 77 passengers: there are 36 seats and 40 standing seats, as well as one specially equipped place for people with disabilities.
Compared to a passenger bus of similar dimensions with a traditional engine, the use of an electric power plant made it possible to increase the number of passenger seats by 4 due to the absence of an engine shaft. Other MAN Lion's City E configuration options are available, in which the maximum number of seats for passengers can reach 88.
In the single-section version (Solo), the electric motor is located on the rear bridge. The maximum power of the motor is 270 kW (in continuous mode - 160 kW), and the torque is 2100 N/m. For articulated versions, two electric motors are provided - on the second and third bridges. The energy reserve is provided by a 480 kWh lithium ion battery (640 kWh for articulated version), which is reliable even under extreme weather conditions and maximum loads. Consisting of six or eight units, the MAN Lion's City modular battery system is located on the roof of the bus - at a place farthest from the area of possible damage in an accident. This arrangement increases the level of safety for the driver and passengers, allows increasing passenger capacity, and also simplifies the maintenance of the electric bus.
Under favorable conditions, the range on one charge reaches 270 km (guaranteed range - 200 km), which is quite enough to run during the working shift. The bus is charged through the CCS charging port with direct current up to 150 kW, which allows you to carry out 100% replenishment of the energy reserve in just 3 hours (for the articulated version - 4 hours) - this indicator allows the bus to easily integrate into any transport system. Battery life without reduction of efficiency is from 6 to 10 years.
MAN Lion's City E has a modern integrated concept of air conditioning and heating. Heat pumps of climate plant and electric heating elements (heating power 30 kW) are used for air heating. The cabin can be prepared for the flight even while charging batteries, which reduces the power consumption on the route. If necessary, an additional heater running on alternative fuels may be installed.
