2021:2 years in prison for the death of a patient

On May 31, 2021, the Volga City Court of the Volgograd Region sentenced two doctors of the Regional Clinical Perinatal Center No. 1 named after L.I. Ushakova in Volzhsky Natalia Andreeva and Elena Popova to two years in a general regime colony for the death of patient Elena Machkalyan four years earlier.

The court found Andreeva and Popova guilty of providing medical care that does not meet the requirements for the safety of life and health of the patient (paragraph "a," "in" part 2 of article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), reports TASS with reference to the head of the joint press service of the courts of the Volgograd region Ekaterina Valkovskaya.

The meeting was held behind closed doors. The husband of the deceased Aram Machkalyan, in a conversation with the Volga news agency City News Agency, said he did not agree with the verdict.

Of course, I will appeal such a lenient sentence. Two years for the death of a young mother is very little. I will insist on the maximum period provided for by the article imputed to him - six years, "he said.

Earlier, Machkalyan stated that a "thorough examination" proved the wrong tactics of conduct that childbirth led to the death of the patient.

According to the case file, Elena Machkalyan with signs of ARVI and the threat of premature birth was hospitalized in the City Hospital No. 2 of Volzhsky. From there, she was bleeding and transferred to the perinatal center. However, the doctors of the maternity care institution on the same day sent the woman back. Three hours later, she was again sent to the Perinatal Center. After re-admission, the patient underwent a caesarean section operation and removed the dead fetus. Due to abundant blood loss, the woman fell into a coma and she was transferred to the Volgograd Regional Clinical Hospital No. 1, where she died 10 days later.

As a result of what happened, it was not ordinary employees who were in the dock, but the head of the obstetric department of the perinatal center and the deputy chief physician for the medical part.^[1]
